Thousands sign petition to remove sexy Jesus from Seville Easter posters
The half-naked Jesus on Sevilla’s Holy Week 2024 publicity posters has caused uproar
The poster for the Holy Week Easter celebrations in Seville this year has caused controversy for depicting, according to its detractors, a sexualised version of Jesus Christ.
A petition on Change.org to have the poster repealed by the Ayuntamiento de Sevilla has gathered 12,000 signatures in just three days from those who consider it an inappropriate way to advertise a fiesta that originates in the crucifixion of Christ, claiming that it does not capture the essence of the “faith, Christian values, the tradition and religious fervour” that characterise Holy Week in Seville.
On the other hand, some people have praised the artistic value of the work. The artist, Salustiano García, has hit back, saying that if anyone sees something dirty in the painting it is “his own internal dirt that he is projecting onto the image”.
In an interview after the controversy aroused after the presentation of the poster, García said, “I intentionally made a young, beautiful Christ, almost without marks of his torture, because what I wanted to represent is the God who is in Christ, and he has left his part of man on earth and now he is ready to be 100% God and one God.”
He continued, “I wanted to make a respectful poster for the institutions and for all Christians. At no time did I want to bother anyone and in fact I have the references in the painting in my family, it is based on my older brother who died young and my son who is the model. I have treated them both with absolute love and respect.”
