ARCHIVED - Three people arrested in Marbella for botched Torremolinos kidnapping
The suspects kidnapped the wrong man in Malaga last January in a case of mistaken identity
The National Police in Marbella have arrested three men in connection with a kidnapping in Torremolinos in January, when a North African man was viciously beaten and snatched from the street before being dumped a short time later when his captors realised they had abducted the wrong man.
Although several eyewitnesses gave descriptions and even the licence plate number of the vehicle, it has taken Operation Enlace four months to track the criminal gang to a house in San Pedro Alcántara. And the arrest is no less bizarre than the original botched kidnapping. When officers stormed into the property, one of the suspects tried to escape by dropping from a fifth-floor balcony onto the third, but he was intercepted by agents and members of the Fire Department.
The original crime was a simple case of mistaken identity, and the gang members mistook their victim for a member of another criminal organisation.
Aged between 30 and 40 years old, the kidnappers are part of a network linked to drug trafficking and one of the three has a valid European arrest and surrender warrant (OEDE) issued by the Belgian judicial authorities.
A search of the Malaga house revealed the same revolver that was used in the kidnapping, 30,000 euros in cash, three kilos of marijuana, 100 grams of hashish, four frequency inhibitors, two phones, two vehicles and a high-end watch.
