ARCHIVED - Torrential hailstorm batters Ecija in Seville province
Aemet had issued storm warnings in advance but many were taken by surprise at the ferocity of the storms across Andalusia in June
To say the weather has been a little out of kilter this spring is an understatement and June began with a week of unsettled weather which came to a spectacular and noisy end at the weekend as storms swept across the region.
There were dozens of reports of lightning strikes, minor flooding and hail, one of which came from Écija in the Seville province which had a heavy hailstorm on Saturday.
In Écija police put out a warning on social networks requesting that residents remained indoors until the hail had cleared, the large balls of ice which pummelled the town denting vehicles, damaging crops and presenting a hazard underfoot.
Insurance assessors will be busy for the next week, the Junta de Andalucía regional government already confirming that millions of euros of damage have been caused to crops within the last week by these unusual ferocious hailstorms.
This week Spain is set to swing to the other extreme, with temperatures in the 30s expected in many areas.
