Torrevieja rescue turtle returns to the sea after two-month recovery
'Nuca' the loggerhead turtle is released back into the wild after a dramatic rescue and two-month recovery

The turtle, nicknamed Nuca, was first spotted by a local resident in early December, floating in the port area and clearly in distress. She was later found to be missing a flipper and had a large fishing hook lodged in her throat. The municipal biologist quickly got involved, and with the help of divers from the Oceanogràfic Foundation and support from the Royal Nautical Club, Nuca was carefully rescued.
She was taken to the Oceanogràfic facilities in Valencia, where vets removed the hook and began treatment. Over the following weeks, she responded well to care and was prepared for release.
Last week on Thursday May 8, Nuca was returned to the waters off Torrevieja from a boat, watched by members of the rescue team and local officials. Among those present were mayor Eduardo Dolón, councillor for the Environment Antonio Vidal, staff from the Real Club Náutico, and the veterinary team from the Oceanogràfic Foundation.
Before being released, she was fitted with a satellite tracking device that will allow scientists to monitor her movements and gather data about her behaviour in the wild. The information will support conservation efforts for loggerhead turtles, which are protected under Spanish law.
Juan Antonio Pujol, the town’s municipal biologist, said: “This release completes a process that began in February, and with luck, we could even see them return to our shores to nest in the coming years.”
This latest release marks a successful outcome for local rescue teams and conservation specialists working to protect the species. After everything she has been through, for those involved in her rescue and recovery, it was an emotional moment to see her swim off strong and healthy.
