Torrevieja scooter crash victim dies months after hit-and-run
69-year-old man’s death could see charges upgraded to involuntary manslaughter
A 69-year-old man has died months after being hit by an electric scooter in Torrevieja, in a case that is now likely to be treated as involuntary manslaughter. The collision happened last July and the victim, who lived in Toledo, passed away on Tuesday December 31 after never recovering from the injuries he suffered.According to his family, the man was left with 95% disability and in a state of extreme fragility following the accident. He spent several weeks in the Intensive Care Unit at Elche General Hospital with serious brain injuries and, although he survived the acute phase and was eventually discharged, his health never truly recovered. Relatives explain that in the end “a mild infection, which in a healthy person would have been treated with an antibiotic pill every 8 hours, proved fatal”, underlining the irreversible impact of the crash.
The driver of the scooter, a 25-year-old man, was arrested by the Policía Local ten days after the incident, following what was described as an intensive search. He had allegedly fled the scene without helping the victim. Sources close to the case say he is “of foreign origin, with a Spanish ID and has been living in Spain for over 15 years”. He was initially investigated for causing serious injury through negligence, but after the victim’s death the offence may be reclassified as involuntary manslaughter, which carries a possible prison sentence of between one and four years under the Spanish Penal Code.
Locals in Torrevieja were deeply shaken by the accident and have voiced growing concern about the way electric scooters are being used in the town. Residents have complained about the increasing speed of these personal mobility vehicles on public roads, often “without control or identification”.
The case has once again reignited calls to tighten regulations and improve monitoring of scooters in urban areas, especially in busy tourist destinations like Torrevieja where their use has grown sharply in recent years.
