Tourist loses finger after horse bite during Menorca festival
A young woman was injured during the Sant Cristòfol celebrations in Es Migjorn Gran, in the second serious incident at Menorca's summer fiestas this year

The accident happened on Sunday August 3, during the Sant Cristòfol festivities in the town of Es Migjorn Gran, when the woman was among the crowd gathered in the main square for the popular jaleos - a much-loved and high-energy display involving rearing horses and cheering spectators.
According to reports, one of the 34 horses taking part suddenly lunged and bit the woman’s hand, severing a finger just as the second-to-last rider, or caixer, entered the square.
She was rushed to Mateu Orfila Hospital in Mahón where she underwent surgery and remains in stable condition.
The jaleos form the heart of the Menorcan patron saint fiestas, which are celebrated in towns across the island throughout the summer. Local riders in traditional dress guide the horses through the crowds, where people are encouraged to get close and raise their arms as the animals rear up.
While the tradition is a major tourist draw, with thousands travelling to the island each year to take part, the events are not without risks. Each summer, both locals and visitors report injuries from falls, trampling or being hit by horses during the processions.
Back in June, another man was seriously injured during the well-known Sant Joan festivities and had to be admitted to intensive care.
Authorities are continuing to urge caution, reminding festival-goers to keep a safe distance from the horses and avoid carrying glass bottles or other objects that could pose a danger in the crowds.
The young woman hurt on Sunday is still recovering, but the accident has cast a shadow over what should have been a joyful occasion.
As one local said, “These fiestas are beautiful, but people forget how unpredictable animals can be, especially when there’s noise, music and so many people around.”
