Tragedy on scenic Spanish road as British couple die in Ferrari crash
Husband and wife were taking part in a luxury car rally when their vehicle left the road and landed in a river in northern Spain
A British married couple have died after their Ferrari left a mountain road and crashed into a river in northern Spain during a high-end car rally.
The incident happened around 2pm on Saturday May 10, near the town of Boca de Huérgano in the province of León. The pair, aged 78 and 58, had been driving a black Ferrari 488, worth around £300,000, which flipped and landed upside down in the Yuso River.
The couple were part of a group of around 20 British Ferrari owners taking part in a driving tour of the region. The convoy had arrived in León the previous day, and were travelling along the N-621, a national highway known for its stunning mountain views but also for its winding, challenging bends.
Emergency crews said they had to battle through thick riverside vegetation to reach the car, which had become partially submerged. Firefighters worked for more than six hours to access the vehicle and recover the bodies. The car was found on its roof in the water and had to be turned over as part of the rescue efforts.
At this stage, it is not clear whether the couple died on impact or as a result of drowning.
Local commentator José Antonio Gutiérrez Sampedro suggested that a medical emergency may have played a part. He said: “Maybe the driver suffered a medical emergency. Such a sad way to lose your life.”
The Ferrari 488 can reach speeds of more than 200 miles per hour and is capable of going from 0 to 60 in under three seconds.
The UK Foreign Office has been contacted for comment but has yet to issue an official statement. An investigation into the exact cause of the crash is ongoing.
