Travel between Andalucía and Madrid for 9 euros in January as new high-speed train gets underway
Tickets have already gone on sale for Ouigo’s Sevilla and Malaga to Madrid lines that will begin operating on January 16
It’s suffered numerous set-backs and delays, but Ouigo’s high-speed train service between Andalucía and the Spanish capital finally has a start date – Thursday January 16 – and super cheap tickets have already been put on sale.
Starting next year, Ouigo will transport passengers from Córdoba, Sevilla and Malaga to Madrid, and those planning to travel can now snap up fares for as little as 9 euros each way.
To begin with, there will be two daily trains between Madrid and Sevilla, with departures at 7.40am and 3.14pm from Puerta de Atocha and at 11.14am and 7.44pm from Santa Justa. The Madrid-Málaga route will have the same frequencies. The trips will leave at 7.19am and 3.:23pm from Puerta de Atocha, and at 11.15am and 7:50pm from María Zambrano, with a journey time of around three hours, depending on the route.
From January 25 there will be three runs from Sevilla (the additional trail will leave at 7.38am).
The French rail company’s arrival in Andalucía has been delayed for several months due to a complicated adaptation to the specific signalling system (LZB) required by the high-speed line between Madrid and Sevilla, in which it claims to have invested 40 million euros.
“The arrival of the trains, the implementation of the safety systems and the approval of these have been delayed, this impacted on the training deadlines for drivers and when you add those weeks of delay the impact increases. It has been difficult to reconcile,” marketing director Federico Pareja said at a recent meeting in Sevilla.
“The arrival in Andalucía is key for Ouigo,” he added.
Tickets for the new Andalucía routes, available on the Ouigo website and app, start at 9 euros for the general adult fare, with a flat rate of 7 euros for children between 4 and 13 years old and free travel for children up to 3 years old.
These journeys will be carried out aboard the modern fleet of 16 double-deck Alstom Euroduplex trains that Ouigo has put on Spain's high-speed tracks for the first time, for a comfortable, easy and fun journey, according to the website.
