ARCHIVED - TRIAL: Granada brothel owner and three Russian women accused of duping victims into sex slavery
The women were lured from Russia and other countries to the Costa del Sol on the "false promise" of working in PR
The Prosecutor's Office in Granada is requesting 40 years in prison for a 67-year-old Spanish man who ran three brothels in the province capital, along with three Russian women, duping victims into prostitution with the "false promise" of working in PR or as event hostesses.
All four will stand trial from Tuesday March 29 for the alleged crimes of trafficking, exploitation of prostitution and crimes against workers' rights, with the three women, aged 38, 41 and 42, facing between nine and 29 years in prison if found guilty.
In addition, the Prosecution has requested that the adult entertainment business which the main defendant is a sole shareholder of be ordered to pay fines of 3.3 million euros, and that all activities are suspended with a total ban on "any future attempts to cover up the crime of prostitution derived from human trafficking".
The victims were allegedly "pressured into prostitution" by the brothel owner between May 2017 and February 2018, and were consequently intimidated and shouted at by the three Russian women who threatened to "throw them out of the club" if they didn't earn enough money.
According to the Prosecution, the "situation of vulnerability" stemmed from the fact the exploited women had entered Spain as tourists with a 90-day visa that prevented them, as non-legal residents, from working officially. In addition, "they did not speak Spanish", were "alone" and had "dependents in their countries of origin".
As for the victims' working conditions, the Prosecution details that they worked from 10pm to 3am from Monday to Friday and from 10pm to 4am on weekends, "a period during which they could not leave the club, with only one day off per week". The price of the drinks was allegedly split 50/50 between the accused and the protected witnesses.
