Tivoli World, the amusement park in Benalmádena closed since September 2020, saw an unusual incident in the early hours of Monday August 11. Two minors from Gibraltar were caught wandering around the park, which has remained shuttered following bankruptcy proceedings that left it with over nine million euros in debts.

 

Around 2.00am, security cameras detected the pair climbing through an emergency gate on the east side of the park. The alert was immediately raised, by orkers monitoring the facility, which remains under 24-hour watch in hopes of a future reopening, and the Policía Nacional were called to handle the situation.

 

Juan Carmona, a former park employee who now keeps watch at Tivoli World night and day, saw the two youngsters wandering around, filming videos on their phones. “They went all the way to the Passage of Terror,” Carmona said. “We guided the police straight to the Jurassic Park area, just above it, and that’s where they were intercepted.”

 

The minors, both under 16, were taken to the local police station. Officers deleted all videos and images they had captured inside the park before contacting their parents. In a conversation with authorities, the youths admitted they were on holiday with their families in Benalmádena and had been trying to copy some friends who supposedly filmed inside the park months ago. Carmona, however, disputes this, pointing out that since 2022, the park’s perimeter is fully covered by cameras, and any intruders are caught immediately.

 

Tivoli World has been closed due to bankruptcy proceedings, with debts exceeding nine million euros, mostly owed to Social Security and the Treasury. Carmona and a small team of former employees continue to guard the site while the Tremón group works on plans to reopen the park in the future. “We will stay here every night until the park opens again,” he said.

 

Even in the quiet of an empty amusement park, the curiosity of teenagers shows that some adventures never stop.
