A serious traffic accident involving three cars took place on the Avenida de la Constitución in Mazarrón this morning, Monday September 5, leaving at least one man, 67, trapped in his car.

The Emergency Coordination Centre 112 of the Region of Murcia received several calls from at around 9.15am reporting a traffic accident in front of the Universidad Popular, in the municipality of Mazarrón.

They reported that three cars were involved in the accident and in one of the cars there was a person who was trapped and couldn’t get out.

The callers also reported that one of the drivers involved ran away from the scene of the accident, violently assaulting anyone who dared to get in his way.

Firefighters on the scene rescued the driver of one of the cars, a 67-year-old man, who was then attended to by paramedics and has been transferred to the Health Centre by ambulance.

Another person, a 55-year-old woman, suffered multiple traumatisms and was taken to the Health Centre by a non-assistance ambulance.

The driver who caused the accident has since been located and detained. Police and emergency services have not yet revealed details of the detainee, nor whether he was under the influence at the time the incident occurred.

This incident comes less than 24 hours after a car flipped over on the Águilas-Calabardina road yesterday, trapping a 47-year-old woman inside.
