Two Spanish beaches among the top 15 in the world
The prestigious list covers everything from the crystalline waters of the Caribbean to the golden sands of Spain
Spring is here, and with it comes the eagerly awaited lists of the world's best beaches. Expansión, a leading Spanish publication, has released its ‘Ranking of the Most Beautiful Beaches in the World 2024’, and two stunning coves in Spain have made the cut this year.
The list, which covers everything from the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean to the golden sands of Spain, features 15 beaches from around the globe. Cala Pola in Tosa del Mar, Girona, and Los Genoveses in Níjar, Almería are the two Spanish beaches that have earned a spot on the prestigious list.
Playa de los Genoveses, located in the breathtaking Cabo de Gata Natural Park, is described by Expansión as a “virgin beach” with a wild and natural atmosphere. Its extensive dunes of fine sand and ideal conditions for water sports make it a paradise for windsurfing enthusiasts and outdoor adventure seekers.
The beach is also near the picturesque town of San José, nestled in the Campillo del Genovés area, which boasts unique and unspoiled beauty.
Genoveses beach is the largest in the bay, stretching for more than a kilometre in length, and is characterised by a small forest in the northern part and abundant sand dunes. Access to the beach is restricted and controlled during the summer months, so visitors are advised to check parking schedules and fees before heading out.
The rest of the beaches featured in the list include Playa del Amor (Mexico), Mazatlán (Mexico), Playa Piedra de Tlacoyunque (Mexico), Playa Maroma (Mexico), Bayahibe (Dominican Republic), Cayo Levantado (Dominican Republic), El Macao (Dominican Republic), Playa Hermosa (Costa Rica), Roatán (Honduras), Falésia Beach (Portugal), Playa Escondida (Mexico), Radhanagar Beach (India) and Blue Lagoon (Malta).
According to Expansión, all of the top 15 picks are “beaches that promise unforgettable experiences for lovers of the sun and the sea.”
Like so many iconic spots in Almeria, Playa de los Genoveses has made its mark on Hollywood and a famous scene from the 1975 movie The Wind and the Lion, starring Sean Connery, was filmed there.
The beach also has a prominent role in Risen (Kevin Reynolds, 2016).
La Playa de los Genoveses also appears in other films such as El boulevard del rum (1971), Ana Caulder (1971), Los corsarios (1971), Viajes con mi tía (1972), La valija (1973), Cristóbal Colón, ex oficio ...descubridor (1982) and El Niño (2014).
