ARCHIVED - Two caught with 860 kilos of hashish in El Puerto de Santa María, Cadiz.
The arrestees were trying to smuggle hashish via the Guadalete river hidden inside petrol containers.
The Guardia Civil in Cádiz have arrested two men, one from El Puerto de Santa María and one from Jerez, for an alleged crime against public health after catching them trying to transport 25 bundles of hashish weighing a total of 860 kilos camouflaged inside petrol containers.
Exterior Surveillance System (SIVE) officers grew suspicious after spotting an unlit, recreational cabin boat near El Puerto heading very slowly towards the mouth of the Guadalete river.
Police on land and at sea set out to find the vessel, which was eventually tracked down with 17 bundles of hashish on board, hidden inside petrol containers. The four men on board fled when they saw the police, but officers later caught and arrested one of them.
At the same time, another patrol in the marina came across a man with a van carrying nine bundles of hashish, again inside petrol containers, who was clearly waiting for the boat and was also arrested.
