ARCHIVED - Uncertainty over Three Kings parade in Malaga
Authorities are exploring the option of holding a televised parade
The worrying evolution of the sixth wave of the coronavirus pandemic, which on Monday December 20 saw the cumulative incidence rate in Andalucía shoot up to 391 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, has now threatened the iconic Three Kings Parade due to be celebrated at the beginning of January.
Drawing adults and children in their droves, the post-Christmas celebration in Malaga was forced to take on a different form last year, and rather than crowds lining the streets to witness the event, the parade was filmed live with no audience and instead, televised.
This week, the mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, has warned that the health crisis is currently giving an indication “of growth and not of reaching any ceiling and going down, for now,” which means that the Three Kings Parade may once again have to be altered to avoid crowds.
According to current restrictions in the community, masks are only required outdoors when large crowds gather, and the Councillor for Festivities, Teresa Porras, is pushing for a classic parade next year, given that “the avenues are wide and ventilated; if people wear the mask there is no problem.”
For now, the question remains unanswered, and although all parties are hoping to be able to celebrate the Three Kings in the normal fashion, the mayor has advised that all options are still open, “pending what the experts and the autonomous community say in this matter.”
