Valencia-New York flights will take off next year
The new Spain-US connection should be up and running by the summer of 2024
Start spreading the news: The Spanish Tourism Ministry is confident that a new connection will be up and running between the Valencian Community and New York by next summer. What’s more, the ministry revealed it is in discussions with several airlines and doesn’t rule out that more than one airport in Valencia could soon be flying to the Big Apple.
Minister Nuria Montes said on Monday (July 31) that "there is sufficient demand for all (the airports)."
"Obviously the flights have to be provided by the airlines, but we believe that there is a lot of interest," Ms Nuria pointed out, while stressing that "there is a lot of demand, there is a lot of market and there are many conditions for it to be possible."
She added that US tourism is "a market in frank expansion towards Europe right now." "All the flights from North America to the main European destinations come with very high occupancies”.
This summer, United Airlines began operating its new seasonal direct flight connection between Malaga Airport and its hub in New York/Newark, recovering a direct route that the Costa del Sol lost in 2019.
So far this year in the city of Valencia, American tourists have accounted for 11% of all hotel stays, placing them at the top of the international market ahead of the Italians, Dutch and British.
For this reason, the minister believes that the leading airlines “need to look for new destinations and new routes to operate because there is enough demand for everyone.”
However, Ms Montes cautioned that expanding New York flights to the Valencian Community isn’t without its “difficulties”.
"The companies have problems because manufacturing an aircraft or having an aircraft available is not easy; the factories, both Airbus and Boeing, are working at full capacity and practically have all their production committed; the companies also have to renew their entire fleet to much more sustainable aircraft, with lower consumption, etc." she concluded.
