The Guardia Civil police in Spain have arrested a 55-year-old Scottish man in the province of Málaga who was wanted by the authorities in his home country for two crimes of sexual assault.
The operation began when the UK’s National Crime Agency received anonymous tip-off indicating that the fugitive could be living in the Costa del Sol town of Nerja, and they passed this on to their Spanish counterparts.
Spanish police carried out an undercover surveillance programme on the man, who was living under a false identity.
They finally made their move to arrest him while he was working out at a sports area on the beach in Nerja.
He was hanging upside down from some exercise equipment – in a clearly vulnerable situation where he wouldn’t be able to easily resist arrest.
The man had been described as dangerous by UK Police. He is accused of sexually assaulting two women he had met on a dating app.
The trial for these offences was put on hold pending his whereabouts, since he fled Scotland in 2022. Back then, the only trace that could be found of him was his car, which had been abandoned by the shore of a loch in Scotland.
He has now been handed over to the Central Examining Court No. 3 of the Audiencia Nacional in Spain, who has ordered his imprisonment pending his extradition to the United Kingdom.
