The Public Health Service of the Junta de Andalucía in Almería is investigating an outbreak of gastrointestinal infection in a hotel complex in Mojácar. So far, 96 people have been infected although their symptoms are mild, lasting between 24 and 48 hours, and nobody has needed to be hospitalised.

Initial reports indicate that patients are suffering from symptoms such as nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting caused by the “viral process” of a suspected norovirus.

The outbreak was first reported on Wednesday July 27 and an epidemiologist and a veterinarian were sent to the Best Pueblo Indalo apartments of the Best Hotels chain to investigate, locate and isolate the origin of the outbreak, take samples and establish protective measures that have included the “disinfection” of all the communal areas.

A spokesperson for Best Hotels said that the cases are not related to “any food issue,” and the health authorities believe that the outbreak is viral in nature.

“From the studies we are almost sure that it is a viral process that is producing these symptoms, although we continue with the investigation to determine its origin,” acting regional health minister Juan de la Cruz Belmonte explained.

The Andalusian health authorities have confirmed that this type of virus is very common during the summer months, particularly in busy hotels and apartment complexes, where it can be easily transmitted from person to person through infected surfaces and even door handles.
