When the German authorities issued European Arrest Warrants (EAW) for two suspected fraudsters who may have fled to Alicante province, Spain’s National Police launched an investigation.
Officers found that the suspects could be living in the Vega Baja municipality of San Fulgencio, where they would be able to blend in as it is predominantly populated by expats.
According to the EAWs, the two men were wanted for organised theft, impersonation and continuing fraud, for which they could face up to 10 years in prison in Germany.
The offences were committed in the German city of Bremen in 2023, where the suspects allegedly formed part of an organised gang dedicated to burgling homes and committing fraud by making phone calls posing as bank employees in order to swindle money and valuables out of victims.
Once officers had identified the address where the suspects were living, they set up a stakeout.
The two fugitives were eventually intercepted in a vehicle near their home.
A third man, who was also in the car at the time, was arrested for serious disobedience after trying to prevent the officers from detaining his companions.
The suspects, who are aged 25, 27 and 34, are all German citizens.
The two fugitives have been put at the disposition of the High Court (Audiencia Nacional) in Madrid, which is responsible for processing their extradition.
