The road leading to the Sierra Nevada ski resort was temporarily blocked off on Sunday afternoon, January 29, when a sudden rock fall cascaded down on top of passing vehicles.

Those injured from the freak accident include a 4-month-old baby, a 2-year-old boy, two women aged 36 and 60, and a 65-year-old man . All were evacuated to the San Cecilio Hospital.

The A-395 motorway, as it passes through Güéjar Sierra, was shut off at kilometre 16 in both directions as emergency services attended to the vehicles that had been trapped in the rock fall.

Officers from the Guardia Civil, Local Police, Civil Protections and members of the emergency services all rushed to the scene, and five people were pulled from vehicles overcome by the landslide.

The rockfall resulted in traffic being blocked off from kilometre 13 of the A-395 being cut off in both directions for several hours as road workers laboured to remove the debris.

The A-4030 in Güéjar-Sierra from kilometre was also cordoned off to traffic due to ongoing works in the area.
