Water restrictions implemented in households across the Costa del Sol
Around 300,000 Malaga residents will face water cuts at night
For the first time in history, water reserves in the Costa del Sol reservoirs have dropped below 100 cubic hectometres and, despite the torrential rain forecast over the next few days, the drought situation is only expected to worsen. To get ahead of the scorching summer season, water restrictions have already been imposed in several Malaga municipalities.
From the third week in January, water pressure will be reduced in Fuengirola between midnight and 7am, so around 300,000 residents will experience some type of supply cut at night.
Fuengirola joins the likes of Veleño, Rincón de la Victoria, Torrox, Vélez-Málaga and the Nerja town of Maro, along with 16 other municipalities in the Axarquia region, all of which introduced similar restrictions at the end of last year. In many of these areas, low water levels have even produced a dangerous increase in the radioactivity of the water, making it unsafe to drink.
And as the vital Concepción reservoir continues to dry up, the Andalucia government hasn’t ruled out further cuts in the next couple of months.
Meanwhile, Fuengirola and Vélez-Málaga town councils have been working for weeks on the search for possible surveys with which to find groundwater suitable for human consumption.
The Fuengirola water cuts will begin on Monday January 15 but unusually, water restrictions will only apply between Sunday and Friday, leaving Saturday operating normally so as to cause the least possible harm to the hospitality sector.
With few signs that the coming rains will alleviate this dire situation, the regional government has advised households to install tanks and cisterns to collect rainwater, if at all possible.
In the case of the hospitality industry, bars and restaurants are already required to have special water reserve systems that provide a self-supply for a minimum of 24 hours.
