ARCHIVED - Western starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal shot in Almeria
Oscar-winning Spanish director Pedro Almodovar has unveiled his Andalucían answer to Brokeback Mountain
Production company El Desco has this week unveiled the official poster for Strange Way of Life, a short Western directed by renowned Spaniard Pedro Almodovar and filmed in Tabernas in Almeria last summer. The movie stars Boyhood actor Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal, who starred in HBO’s end-of-days thriller The Last of Us, Disney’s The Mandalorian and Netflix’s Narcos.
This is Oscar-winner Almodovar’s second English-language film and while he’s remaining tight-lipped about the ins and outs of the plots, it’s widely believed that the movie will be his answer to Brokeback Mountain, but with far more explicit sex scenes.
What we do know so far is that gunslinging cowboy Silva (Pedro Pascal) crosses the desert from Bitter Creek on horseback to be reunited with childhood buddy Sheriff Jake (Ethan Hawke), who he last met 25 years previously. Following an emotional reunion, Silva reveals that there is more to his journey than a trip down memory lane.
Speaking on the Dua Lipa podcast, the director gave some more hints: “It’s a gay Western, in the sense that there are two men and they love each other.
“It’s about masculinity in a deep sense because the Western is a male genre,” he said.
“What I can tell you about the film is that it has a lot of elements of the Western. It has the gunslinger, it has the ranch, it has the sheriff, but what it has that most Westerns don’t have is the kind of dialogue that I don’t think a Western film has ever captured between two men.”
The short was filmed on located in Almeria over the last four days of August 2022: two days were spent in the Tabernas Desert and two in the Western Leone, where a local building was kitted out to act as the sheriff’s office. The Almeria desert has been used for shooting scenes of the Wild, Wild West for decades, including for classic Clint Eastwood movies, as well as Star Wars, Indiana Jones and The Neverending Story.
Strange Way of Life will debut at the Cannes Film Festival, which celebrates its 76th edition from May 16 to 27.
