ARCHIVED - 11 immigrants rescued in the Strait of Gibraltar
The migrants were safely taken to shore in Cádiz, Andalucía
Desperate attempts to reach Spain by African migrants continue as Maritime Rescue Services in Andalucía intercept a boat with 11 irregular immigrants aboard in the Strait of Gibraltar.
The authorities were contacted by a recreational boat which raised the alarm after sightings of a dinghy carrying migrants about four nautical miles south of Punta Europa in Gibraltar.
Maritime Rescue services sent their boat, Salvamar Denébola, to rescue the migrants, who were all sub-Saharan males, and take them to the port of Algeciras in Cádiz.
Recently, there have been several tragic cases where immigrants have been found dead after attempting to reach the Canary Islands in unsafe boats and, on one of the boats found this week, only seven of the 54 people aboard were rescued alive.
