ARCHIVED - 36-year-old dies after receiving Janssen vaccine in Sevilla
Health authorities in Andalusia have stated the death is now under investigation to determine any possible link to the Covid vaccine
A 36-year-old man from the province of Sevilla, Andalusia, has died two weeks after receiving the Janssen Covid vaccine.
The man began to feel unwell just a few days after receiving the vaccine and was taken to hospital, where doctors initially diagnosed him with an ‘ictus’ (a stroke or sudden attack, such as a subarachnoid haemorrhage).
He was taken into intensive care, but medical professionals were unable to save him and he died two weeks after receiving the Janssen vaccine.
The Spanish Medicine Agency, along with the European Medicine Agency, has been informed of the incident, which is now under investigation to determine whether the death is linked to the vaccine.
The regional Health Minister, Jesús Aguirre, has expressed his condolences to the family and has reminded the public that “1,720,000 Janssen vaccines have been administered so far in Spain” and this is “the first case in which there could be any cause-and-effect relationship” between the vaccine and the death.
He added “the pertinent studies are being carried out and if there is a cause-and-effect relationship”, the “appropriate actions” will be taken.
The region of Andalusia is starting to administer vaccines to 18 to 19-year-olds this Tuesday (July 27) and 16 to 17-year-olds on Thursday (July 29), who will receive Moderna and Pfizer vaccines.
