ARCHIVED - Alarm in several Almeria towns and villages after tap water turns pink
Galasa, the company responsible for water supply in Almeria province's Levante and Almanzora regions, has assured there's no "health risk"
Residents in several Almeria towns and villages got quite a shock on Sunday morning (February 19) when their tap water suddenly turned a disturbing pink colour, causing concern and alarm and prompting health assurances from the water board.
The majority of homes in municipalities such as Taberno, Zurgena, Cuevas del Almanzora, Arboleas and Pulpí in the Levante and Almanzora regions of Almeria were affected by the freaky colouration.
And in response to the general social alarm, the company that manages the water supply in these towns, Galasa, (Gestión de Aguas del Levante Almeriense S. A.) issued a statement on Sunday afternoon confirming there was an "operational incident" at the drinking water treatment plant that resulted in "an increase in the dosage of manganese in the process".
"This has caused a visual effect in the water consisting of a slight pinkish colouration," read the statement.
Galasa has assured that the incident "does not constitute any health risk according to the parameters established by the World Health Organisation" and therefore "it is not necessary to adopt any precautionary measures".
The firm also pointed out that "normality will be restored in the next 24 hours having adopted the appropriate corrective measures", and stated that the Regional Health Authority and Town Halls in the affected municipalities "were notified".
There have been no further reports of bizarre colouration, suggesting the manganese levels have indeed been rectified.
