Alicante Airport expands: 20 million euro upgrade to handle growing passenger numbers
The Costa Blanca terminal is currently one of the fastest growing among Spain’s largest airports
As passenger numbers at Alicante Airport continue to grow month after month, a major step forward has been taken to expand the terminal and taxiways. This week, Spain’s airport management company Aena has put the project out to tender with the aim of meeting even higher demand in the future.
The extensive project, which will cost almost 20 million euros, involves expanding the terminal building to cater to more passengers, increasing the size of the aircraft parking area, new commercial spaces, road works, a larger cargo space and a new general aviation terminal.
The cornerstone of this remodelling will be the expansion of the current terminal building, and will include, among other things, the extension of the current boarding dock over the old Terminal 1 and the current General Aviation Terminal.
This new structure will make it possible to manage future demand for non-Schengen traffic, with centralised border control and new gates that should ease the flow of non-EU traffic.
The project will include upgrading the existing terminal to expand the security area. It will feature state-of-the-art technology, such as Automated Tray Return Systems (ATRS), which quickly return trays from hand luggage checks to the starting point, making the process faster and cutting down waiting times.
Additionally, advanced Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage (EDS CB) will be installed, allowing passengers to leave electronic devices and permitted liquids in their bags during security screening.
The construction of the new dock will also include additional commercial spaces and a new VIP lounge exclusively for non-Schengen passengers. Meanwhile, the Schengen flight area will retain its own VIP lounge.
The projects covered by this tender also include work on car parks, offices, equipment and remodelling of existing facilities (energy, air conditioning, etc.) to provide service to new buildings and airport areas.
