ARCHIVED - Almeria reduces CO2 emissions by 1,800 tonnes per year thanks to solar energy
The reduced carbon footprint has saved Almeria 600,000 euros in electricity costs
As part of its Municipal Energy Saving Plan launched back in 2019, the capital of Almeria has managed to reduce its CO2 emissions by an impressive 1,800 tonnes per year, which is the equivalent of taking 900 vehicles off the roads. In addition to drastically cutting its carbon footprint, the improvement has also saved the municipal coffers 600,000 euros in electricity.
“We work every day so that we can all live in a more sustainable, greener Almería, where you can breathe better. And that is why we have implemented these measures, which are based on improving energy efficiency in municipal buildings while maintaining lighting and comfort conditions; using thermal and photovoltaic solar energy and applying energy efficiency in replacing the old public lighting systems with state-of-the-art LED technology,” the mayor of Almeria said.
Almeria – both the province and its capital city – is uniquely placed to benefit from green energy production based on solar panels, as it is the place on mainland Spain with the most sunshine hours.
The lighting renovation in Almeria city has contributed greatly to the overall results. Through local and European funding, more than three million euros has been invested in projects like the installation of 7,000 LED lights around the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. At the moment, the Department of Environmental Sustainability is focusing on the city centre, where the old street lights have been replaced with more energy efficient ones.
The extensive remodelling of the San Isidro Park has also been finished, as has the construction of the Skate Park in Nueva Andalucia, where the LED lighting systems will save an estimated 35%.
In the near future, Almeria City Council plans to install photovoltaic panels on the roof of the Local Police Headquarters which will essentially turn it into a completely self-sufficient building and the authorities are examining the possibility of equipping the desalination plant with solar panels also in a bid to cut production costs and water bills.
