ARCHIVED - Dog pee repelling street lights arrive in Almeria
The plan is to eventually apply the harmless repellent to lamp posts throughout the Andalucia city
Almeria City Council has begun installing its new and improved lampposts designed to dissuade dogs from peeing on the poles, since their urine corrodes the galvanised metal. The street lights are coated with a repellent product that has been extensively tested by both the Environmental Sustainability team and public lighting company Citelum and the first lampposts have already been treated in the Nueva Andalucía neighbourhood.
The repellent, which is completely harmless to animals, is being applied to all of the street lights located between Calzada de Castro to Padre Méndez at the moment but councillor Margarita Cobos would like to see the treatment extended to the rest of Almeria in the future.
"We started testing the product in November and we were surprised because it works, so we decided to apply it to the street lights in Nueva Andalucía," she said. Quite aside from the cost associated with replacing streetlamps that have been corroded by dog pee, it actually poses a real danger since the damage can cause the lampposts to fall.
A new street light costs around 1,000 euros and considering that the repellent treatment lasts for several months, it’s a great alternative investment.
Despite the initial scepticism surrounding the project when it was initially proposed by the councillor last year, it’s already producing great results and will continue to be rolled out in this part of the city.
The Murcian municipality of Aguilas trialled a similar product a few years ago and in Cartagena, a group of students have used 3D printing to design the first plastic cover that protects lampposts from dog, and indeed human, urine.
Ms Cobos has made a general appeal to pet owners to try to prevent their dogs from urinating against lamp posts while out on walks given the costs to the municipal coffers as well as the smell and unsightly stains.
