ARCHIVED - Andalucia scraps mandatory Covid passport from February 15
The Covid certificate will no longer be required to enter bars, restaurants and other public spaces on the Costa del Sol
The Andalusian Government has confirmed the Covid passport to enter bars, restaurants, gyms and other public spaces will no longer be required from Tuesday February 15.
The Covid passport was introduced in December and was essential for access to hospitality and nightlife establishments, as well as for hospital and elderly residence visits and travel.
But a steady drop in infections in Andalucía has prompted the Ministry of Health to abolish the measure rather than request an extension.
“February 15 is the deadline for an extension of the Covid passport, but we are not going to ask for the renewal, and so the necessity to provide the certificate for entry to nightlife, restaurants, health and social-health establishments will expire,” said the Minister of Health, Jesús Aguirre.
Justifying the move, he added: “Coercive measures must be removed since, although the figures for contagion are not yet normal, there is a very clear trend towards a drop in the accumulated incidence and hospital pressure, so the Regional Government will not be implementing any new measures.”
He also acknowledged the impact the introduction of the Covid passport has had on all sectors, and the hospitality industry in particular,
“Immense work has been done implenting the measure, but the passport has acted as an incentive, not only to make establishments safe, but also to encourage those who were more reluctant to get vaccinated,” said the Minister, attributing a decrease in the number of unvaccinated people in Andalucia, which now stands at 290,000, to the anti-Covid measure.
However, a Covid certificate will still be required to travel to certain countries, a restriction that is dependent on an agreement at a national level or through the European Union.
