Andalucia warns of possible water restrictions in the coming months
If it doesn’t rain by the end of the summer, “painful measures” will have to be imposed in Andalucía in September
Andalucía’s regional president has warned that, if the lack of rain continues in the coming months, there will be little choice other than to impose water restrictions, which will affect the entire population.
At the moment, the agricultural sector is bearing the brunt of the drought which is rapidly drying up the region’s reservoirs but if the situation hasn’t improved by September, drastic measures like limiting washing and the filling of swimming pools will be considered.
The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, reassured on Wednesday April 26 that water supplies for the summer are “guaranteed”, but he has once again criticised the Spanish government for its “inefficient” reactions to the plight of the community.
“In a short time, there will be parts of Andalucia where the tap will open and there will be no water,” he said.
The Governing Council has just approved the third Andalusian Drought Decree, which includes measures worth 163 million euros aimed at tackling the complicated situation. Immediate tasks will include promoting the recycling of water, reducing irrigation and searching for new water supplies.
Andalucía, like the Region of Murcia, is facing a financial backlash as expensive crops wither and feed for livestock runs out. Moreno estimates that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will drop by around seven points by the end of the summer if the rains don’t make an appearance, resulting in the loss of up to 140,000 jobs.
“There are no pastures. There are farmers who only have 10 days left and are sacrificing animals and closing farms. The situation is very delicate,” he said, pleading with the central government to provide more resources in Andalucía.
Regarding a possible hosepipe ban at the end of the summer, the regional president could only say: “Let’s hope it rains so we do not have to take these painful measures.”
