ARCHIVED - Andalusia reservoirs topped up by storm remain dangerously low
The Guadalquivir in Andalucía has been suffering drought since the start of November
The weather across Spain has been nothing if not unpredictable in the last couple of weeks, with warm, sunny days interspersed with torrential rain, more of which is to come this week with the arrival of storm Celia. While holidaymakers may be disappointed by the wet weather, the precipitation has been welcomed in Andalucía, where water reserves have been in a drought situation since last November 1.
As a result of the recent storms, the reservoirs in Andalucía have increased by 11 cubic hectometres of water (0.12%) in the last week alone, but this is still just 29.68% of their total capacity and a significant 15.07% less water than the reserves contained this time last year.
According to the latest data released by the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge on Tuesday March 15, the Guadalquivir basin is currently at just 28.66% of its overall capacity with a total of 2,325 cubic hectometres of water – an increase of 12 hectometres in a week. On the other hand, water levels in the Andalusian Mediterranean Basin have actually fallen by one cubic hectometre to stand at a capacity of 29.13%.
These are the two main reservoirs in Andalucía; the others are in Tinto, Odiel and Piedras in Huelva and Guadalete-Barbate in Cadiz. The reservoirs in Huelva remain at 169 cubic hectometres, 73.80% of their capacity while the Cádiz reserves remain unchanged at 28.95%.
