ARCHIVED - Andalusian president supports removing masks indoors: Covid update March 9
The regional president has declared that wearing masks inside could soon be a thing of the past, but the region still has second highest daily death toll in Spain
The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, has shown himself to be in favour of a “gradual and responsible” withdrawal of masks in indoor spaces, as long as we follow the recommendations of scientific and health experts, and has insisted on asking the population to be very “prudent” because a new strain of the coronavirus could emerge that could force the adoption of restrictions once again.
The announcement comes as the region continues its gradual recovery from the sixth wave of coronavirus, but Andalucía is still the autonomous community in Spain with one of the highest daily death tolls, with a further 23 people passing away from Covid-19 in the last day.
New infections
Today Andalucía has registered a total of 2,649 new positive cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, over 1,000 more than on Tuesday.
The 2,649 infections are registered after 1,512 on Tuesday, 5,278 on Monday (72 hours), 2,809 on Friday, 2,457 on Thursday and 746 on Wednesday.
By provinces, Malaga has the most infections with 599, followed by Córdoba with 331, Almería with 226, Cádiz with 469, Seville with 436, Granada with 184, Huelva with 218 and Jaén with 186.
Cumulative incidence rate
According to data from the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalucía (IECA), the 14-day cumulative incidence rate in the region stands at 262.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, five points less than on Monday.
Hospitalisations
Andalucía has recorded a drop of 18 patients hospitalised with coronavirus compared to Tuesday, to a total of 672, while ICU admissions are down by two to 88 people.

Of the 23 deaths, six were recorded in the province of Seville, five in Cadiz, four in Malaga, two in Almeria, Granada and Huelva, and one each in Córdoba and Jaén.

A total of 7,282,599 people are fully vaccinated in Andalucía (86% of the population over 5 years of age) and 7,568,894 people have had at least one vaccine jab (89.3% of the population).
