ARCHIVED - Antonio Banderas looking to premiere musical in English about Picasso in Malaga
The A-lister is undertaking a series of new cultural projects in his native Andalusia
Hollywood actor Antonio Banderas, who hails from Malaga, is talking to “important people on Broadway” about staging a musical in English about Pablo Picasso, which he hopes “will end up being a reality”, and has announced that, if it comes to fruition, the world premiere would be held at the Caixabank Soho Theatre in Malaga.
“There is a project related to Picasso, but I can’t say more,” said Banderas, who this Tuesday presented the concerts of the Soho Pop Symphony Orchestra.
If the project goes ahead, “it would be a milestone”, because it would premiere in Malaga “with the original company that would go to Broadway”, and “it would be unusual for an American company to present it in Spain”.
Banderas is also in the process of “securing the rights” for a new musical in Soho that is “among the pillars of American musical theatre” and for which he has “very advanced negotiations”, although he wouldn’t say which one.
He has assured that “it will surprise” everybody because “nobody would dare to do it in Spain”, just as the last musical he starred in, Company, was also “a very risky bet that has turned out well” with almost 60,000 spectators and an average of 758 people seeing each performance.
Antonio Banderas is very active on the local theatre and cultural scene in his native Malaga, and has also recently announced plans to launch a new restaurant in Malaga Port.
