ARCHIVED - Spanish film star Antonio Banderas to open new restaurant at Malaga port
The Malaga-born actor's new eaterie aims to transform the promenade into the Costa del Sol's new Golden Mile
Puss in Boots star Antonio Banderas plans to launch a new restaurant in partnership with the Tercer Acto Group to transform Malaga Port into the Costa Del Sol's new Golden Mile.
Work on the Spanish film star's Club Mediterráneo began two months ago, with a view to welcoming its first diners in Easter 2023.
"The concept is based on quality service, cuisine and decor, giving the restaurant a cosmopolitan character typical of European capitals. We offer things that the public are not used to seeing", promised Pablo González, head of Tercer Acto Group.
As well as international food, with a focus on locally-sourced fish, the eaterie on Malaga's promenade will serve cocktails.
"A spatial renovation is being carried out to create a benchmark environment for locals and visitors to the city, with an eye on events and congress tourism, a fundamental element in Malaga. We need space for them because the offer is limited, the new restaurant can be combined with the port's events area," added the group boss.
Banderas was one of those interested in converting the old Boathouse into a luxury restaurant three years ago. However, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, he and his partners (Pimpi and Juan Rambla) withdrew from the bidding.
Built just over 10 years ago, the port promenade has become an integral part of the Costa del Sol's gastronomic scene.
And now with the opening of Banderas' restaurant, along with another by Trocadero Casa de Botes in May, this area will be completely transformed into "one of the best gastronomic places to eat out in the Costa del Sol".
The openings following the reactivation of the extension plan that Muelle Uno, the company responsible for the port's shopping centre, launched in May 2022.
In addition to the commercial and cultural area (with the Pompidou Museum as the most outstanding element), another feature that supports the port's development is the mega-yacht marina. According to a Port Authority study, the economic activity is estimated at around 100 million euros per year.
This project saw the light of day in the middle of last year, but not without controversy due to the erection of a fence that blocked the view of the sea. The mayor even intervened, describing it as "inappropriate".
It remains to be seen whether this evolving promenade will culminate in a clear view of the landscape or with the Qatari tower finally installed on the Levante breakwater.
If realised, the latter controversial building would also form part of the gastronomic offer, housing the Mirador with the VIP Restaurant/Snack-Bar/Cafeteria on the top floor with panoramic views.
