ARCHIVED - A cheap place to spend the winter: Andalusia appeals to Brits and northern Europeans to be energy nomads
Andalusia president claims southern Spain is “the perfect place for the energy nomad” at the World Travel Market in London
The president of the autonomous community of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno, made comments at the World Travel Market in London this week, appealing to people from the UK and elsewhere in northern Europe, such as the Nordic countries, to become “energy nomads” by spending their winter in the south of Spain.
Moreno insisted that Andalusia is “the perfect place” to come for those who have the option of working remotely as they can come to Andalusia for long stays and take advantage of its climate “without having to turn on the heating or gas so much”.
The invitation has been extended to all those who telework in Nordic and central European countries in order to escape the high cost of energy and the cold winter. Earlier this year, Germany even considered paying its elderly folk up to 500 euros to move to Spain for the winter so they would use less energy in their home country.
However, in reality, the ‘90-days-in-180’ rule that stops non-EU citizens – which since Brexit includes Brits – from spending more than 90 days in a six-month period in Spain would stop “energy nomads” from making the most of these long stays in Andalusia if they are not resident in Spain.
British tourism in Andalusia
At the travel fair, Moreno claimed that Andalusia’s leadership in tourism is based on its ability to anticipate new trends, while at the same time stating that one of the priorities is to strengthen its position as a leading destination for the British market.
For now, Andalusia expects to close 2022 with almost 31 million tourists, compared to 32.5 million in 2019, and more revenue than in 2019 thanks to the increase in spending by travellers and the fact that they are staying for longer.
This summer has driven demand, with 11.1 million visitors between July and September, almost as many as in 2019, before lockdown, and there was tourist spending of 8.22 billion euros, seven points above the 2019 figure.
