Global warming and climate change are irrevocably altering our planet and Spain displayed the effects of this in recent days, sweltering in the earliest June heatwave since the 19080s. But more trouble is afoot, as the experts from the global warning system ‘Tsunami Ready’ believe a tidal event of “catastrophic” proportions is very likely to hit the Mediterranean in the next 30 years.

While “there is not a 100% chance of it happening,” the scientists acknowledge a high likelihood that a tsunami, with waves over a metre high and 700 deep, will thrash the coasts in the not too distant future. Given the probability, “we have to be prepared for it,” they stressed.

According to the Secretary of the UNESCO Oceanographic Commission (IOC), there are currently 40 coastal areas in 21 countries that are putting the necessary groundwork in place in the event of a tsunami, but the UN ocean summit scheduled for June 27 is expected to focus on developing plans for all regions at risk.

In the Mediterranean in particular, the experts have warned that several countries have severely underestimated the dangers.

The EU project actually began back in 2020 in Greece after the island of Kos suffered from a relatively small tidal wave in 2017.

“The goal is to have 100% of the coastal areas prepared to experience a tsunami. Many of them are vulnerable areas and must be prepared when faced with this threat," explained the IOC-UNESCO tsunami program specialist, Bernardo Aliaga.
