ARCHIVED - Gibraltar flatly refuses joint sovereignty call from Spain
Andalucia's President has requested a move towards co-sovereignty between Spain and the UK
The Government of Gibraltar has flatly refused calls for shared or joint sovereignty of the British colony between the UK and Spain.
In the wake of Boris Johnson's resignation, Andalucia's President Juanma Moreno said he had high hopes that the PM's successor is open to "cooperation" and making progress towards "shared sovereignty".
Moreno said this would be the most "desirable, reasonable and sensible" way forward for workers and residents of the Rock.
However, whilst the Gibraltarian Executive is also in favour of "mutual cooperation" with Spain and neighbouring regions such as Andalucia amid the political turmoil in the UK following the Conservative party leader's resignation, he was adamant that "this government and Gibraltar as a whole will in no way contemplate shared or joint sovereignty".
In a statement, he added: "The same principle was submitted to the people of Gibraltar for consultation in a referendum in 2002 and was decisively and overwhelmingly rejected."
"That situation has not changed and will not change. British sovereignty over Gibraltar will not change or be shared. 'Yes' to cooperation to work together on political issues and improve the lives of people on both sides of the border, particularly following the UK and Gibraltar's departure from the EU; but no to joint sovereignty, the two things do not have to be mixed."
In June, Spain stressed to the United Nations that only negotiation with the UK will put an end "to the colonial situation" in Gibraltar.
And back in December 2021, Madrid and London agreed to extend the memorandum of understanding that regulates relations with Gibraltar until the new year.
