ARCHIVED - US citizens face trouble crossing between Spain and Gibraltar
It is mostly staff from the US naval station in Rota, Cádiz who are being warned not to travel to Gibraltar due to visa and ID issues
The US Embassy in Spain is said to be “fully engaged” in an effort to the resolve the issues currently faced by US citizens trying to cross the Gibraltar-Spain border.
The Commanding Officer of the US Naval Station in Rota, Captain David Baird, stated in a Facebook post that many members of the American community in Rota have been having trouble crossing into Spain from Gibraltar in the past week.
Captain Baird said “unpredictable delays continue” and strongly discouraged any US members of the Rota Naval Station community from travelling between Gibraltar and Spain for the time being.
He further advised anyone who absolutely has to travel to Gibraltar to take their TIE Spanish Foreigner identity card and a passport with a valid entry stamp for Spain, along with enough money to sustain them for several nights in a hotel just in case there is a delay.
Captain Baird finally affirmed that the US Embassy in Madrid is working to address these issues “at the highest levels”.
