ARCHIVED - Rishi Sunak and Spanish President Pedro Sanchez want to close Gibraltar deal ASAP
In a meeting, the pair agreed that a deal should be made “as soon as possible” but failed to give a time frame or specifics of what the agreement should look like
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the President of Spain Pedro Sánchez held a telephone call yesterday, Thursday May 4, to discuss the progress being made on the EU-Gibraltar deal.
The two leaders affirmed that an agreement should be reached “as soon as possible” regarding Gibraltar’s status and relationship with the European Union post-Brexit.
A statement from Number Ten Downing Street explained that Sunak and Sánchez agreed on the importance of making progress in the negotiations towards a treaty between the United Kingdom and the EU, but without offering any other concrete steps to make that happen.
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory that shares a land border with Spain and consequently the European Union. The negotiations to work out how Gibraltar will continue to co-exist in terms of trade and freedom of movement with the EU while the British retain full sovereignty of it, have been going on since 2020, as the Rock was not included in the Brexit agreement made then.
At the end of last year, the deadline to reach an agreement on Gibraltar was extended until the end of December 2024, a sure indicator of the authorities’ confidence on coming to a satisfactory deal “as soon as possible”.
Back in 2020, British Ambassador to Spain Hugh Elliott was reportedly kicked out of Gibraltar talks after apparently negotiating to put Spanish boots on the ground at the Gibraltar border, prompting then Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab to not only replace him but to act in an “unreasonably and persistently aggressive” way towards him.
