ARCHIVED - Three tourists found dead in the Sierra Nevada ski resort in Spain in four days
The bodies have been discovered less than a month after the Granada resort opened for the season
After such a promising start to the season, Spain’s premier ski resort, the Sierra Nevada, has been the scene of three tragic accidents in just four days.
On Thursday December 15, the body of a 22-year-old Belarusian man was recovered in the Granada mountains. The young tourist was reported missing after he failed to return from a hike on Sunday December 11 and the specialised rescue team of the Guardia Civil has been combing the hills for him ever since.
According to early reports, it appears that the hiker fell at some point in his journey and was carried away by the current of the fast-flowing river.
Just three days before, the bodies of two Hungarian women, aged 57 and 55, were discovered close to the university hostel in the Hoya de la Mora area. A passer-by found the unresponsive individuals and notified the emergency services.
When the police and medical workers arrived on the scene they surmised that the two women must have died from hypothermia, since there were no outward signs of violence or injury.
Although a post-mortem will be carried out, third party involvement has been ruled out and the authorities believe the women became lost and died from exposure.
