ARCHIVED - Training workshop in Huelva to help Covid patients regain sense of smell and taste
An Andalucía hospital has hosted the first workshop for patients suffering from long-term Covid effects
One of the most well-known side effects of coronavirus is the sometimes permanent loss of smell and taste, which is why the Juan Ramón Jiménez Hospital in Huelva has organised a workshop for patients affected by lack of taste or smell.
Ageusia, also known as a lack of taste, and anosmia, or lack of smell, are two common consequences after a Covid infection, and can cause severe limitations in patients’ daily lives. According to studies on the subject, up to 10% of patients reported persistent ageusia or anosmia.
However, in most cases these symptoms tend to spontaneously disappear in a variable period of time, but in the meantime, there are some exercises and treatments in order to achieve improvement or an earlier recovery.
During the workshop, experts guided the patients through the different techniques and exercises, which can also be used at home, to regain some sense of smell and taste.
Exercises to regain the ability to smell include exposing the nose to a wide range of strong smells, such as citrus, mint, floral oils, while using visual elements associated with these scents.
Although a lack of taste appears to be a secondary consequence to a lack of smell and is usually regained along with smelling ability, there are some ‘training’ exercises to strengthen taste buds, which involve using sweet, salty, sour, bitter and umami food items.
The success of the workshop has led the professionals to organise two further sessions, another one for patients and one specifically for health staff.
Data released by the regional authorities in Andalucía last weekend, revealed that the 14-day cumulative incidence rate in the region is 52.7 per 100,000 inhabitants.
