ARCHIVED - Bachelors on board: rowdy stag party forced to pay compensation for delaying Madrid-Malaga train
The eleven men caused a 23 minute delay by refusing to get off the train at Córdoba station
A court in Madrid has ordered eleven members of a bachelor party to pay rail operator Renfe 7,676 euros, or 697.82 euros each, for causing a substantial delay on the Madrid-Malaga AVE line. The rail company will use the funds to compensate the other 216 train passengers who were inconvenienced by the 23 minute stoppage.
The ill-fated stag party caught the train to Malaga on July 6 of 2018 and decided to begin the party on board. As the journey wore on, the eleven revellers “increasingly disturbed order inside the train, shouting, singing and hitting the walls of the train, ignoring the instructions and calls for attention from Renfe staff.”
As the group became more rowdy, the conductor called on Renfe Security to throw the young men off the train. However, this is where the trouble started. Once the train arrived in Córdoba station, the court heard, “the defendants took the opportunity to definitively escalate their party in the train’s cafeteria, where they were drinking, dancing, singing and shouting at at full volume and in a totally uncontrolled way.”
The men flatly refused to leave the train and eventually the National Police had to be called in to escort them onto the platform. The ruckus resulted in the other passengers arriving at their destination almost half an hour late. The offenders will now have to pay damages for the problems they caused.
