Boat mooring banned in 4 areas of the Mar Menor to protect endangered seaweed
The areas affected by the ban will be marked on Isla de la Perdiguera, Isla Mayor, Punta del Galán-Pedruchillo and Matas Gordas
Spain’s Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA), via the Maritime Captaincy of Cartagena, of the General Directorate of the Merchant Navy (DGMM), has issued a resolution prohibiting the anchoring of ships and boats in four areas of the Mar Menor to protect the common nacra (Pinna nobilis), a bivalve mollusk that can reach up to 120 centimetres in length and which has been declared to be “in a critical situation” by an Order from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
The resolution will take effect immediately and its main objective is to protect this marine species. To this end, the areas prohibited for anchoring will be permanently marked around Isla de la Perdiguera, Isla Mayor, Punta del Galán-Pedruchillo and Matas Gordas.
This measure responds to a request made by the General Directorate of the Natural Environment of the Autonomous Community of Murcia just a month ago, in order to implement Order TEC/1078/2018 of September 28, which declares the critical situation of several marine species, including the common nacra, and projects aimed at its recovery are declared of general interest.
The Maritime Captaincy has issued a stern warning that failure to comply with the prohibition of dropping anchor in these stated areas – except in cases of danger or force majeure – may constitute an administrative infraction that could culminate in a sanction from the Civil Navy.
