Bodies pulled from Fuengirola surf as search continues for missing paddle boarders
The authorities have confirmed that the bodies recovered off the coast of Malaga do not belong to the missing men
Two bodies were pulled from the water off the coast of the Malaga municipality of Fuengirola on Tuesday August 29. However, official sources have confirmed that the deceased are not the Argentinean men who disappeared from La Misericordia beach earlier in the week.
The tourists, aged 29 and 34, went paddle boarding early on Sunday morning, August 27. They left the beach at around 7.30am despite the fact that the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) had issued a yellow wind warning and haven’t been heard from since.
A large-scale search operation was launched when the boys failed to return to shore and on Monday evening, their empty paddle board was spotted by a sailboat around 24 kilometres southeast of Malaga, off Torre del Mar.
One surfing expert believes that the strong winds much have dragged the light equipment away from the shore.
"Surely the gusts caught them far from the coast and they could no longer reach the beach," he said.
Camila, the sister of one of the missing men, reported their disappearance to the National Police and explained that they were both novices at paddle boarding.
“They don’t know the deep sea,” she said, saying that they had previously been out in the water no more than four or five times.
Her brother is due to return to Argentina in September after his vacation while his friend has been staying in Malaga since the beginning of the year.
Rescue boats and helicopters continue to search for the missing men.
Meanwhile, in Mallorca, the Makan Agin sailboat also disappeared on August 27 after departing from Cala Galdana in the direction of Cala d’Or on a day when the Balearic Islands were being wracked by intense storms. A 50-year-old German man and his 19-year-old son were on board.
