ARCHIVED - Bomb disposal experts detonate Civil War grenade found in Malaga river
The device was discovered by a fisherman at the mouth of Guadalmedina river in Malaga city
Bomb disposal experts have detonated a mortar grenade from the Spanish Civil War at the mouth of the Guadalmedina river in Malaga city.
The explosive, a remnant of the war between July 1936 and April 1939, was found by a fisherman on Monday afternoon, February 27, and the explosives deactivation unit (Tedax) of the National Police was immediately notified.
The grenade was in such a state of deterioration that it could not be moved, so Tedax specialists carried out a controlled detonation at the river mouth.
This isn't the first time explosives from the Civil War have been found in Malaga province. In April last year, the Tedax unit had to detonate or remove explosive devices on three separate occasions, one of them in the capital and two others in the town of Torremolinos.
In Malaga city, a hand grenade known as 'La imparcial', so called because it was equally unsafe to handle for either side in the conflict, was discovered in the Puerto de la Torre neighbourhood of Arroyo de Casasola, .
The other two devices were found in Torremolinos during the clearing of a building site, an M31 pineapple fragmentation hand grenade and a mortar shell.
Back in 2019, several World War II explosives were uncovered among potatoes in a food processing plant in the province of Granada.
After emptying a sack of potatoes into a peeling machine, employees found three shell fuses and the body of a hand grenade, the second time a shell fuse was found at the same factory in the space of a month.
The Guardia Civil investigated and the items were believed to have come from the Somme region in France.
