The price of bottled gas in Spain is going up again, with the cost of a standard butane cylinder increasing by 4.9% from Tuesday March 17 to €16.35, according to the latest update published in the Official State Gazette.

 

This latest rise follows a resolution from the Directorate General for Energy Policy and Mines and reflects ongoing changes in international energy markets, transport costs and exchange rates.

 

One of the main drivers behind the increase is a sharp jump in freight costs, which have surged by 16.6%. Raw material prices have also edged up by 3.2%, while a slight 1.2% shift in the euro-dollar exchange rate has further influenced the final price, according to the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

 

Unlike many other energy products, the price of bottled liquefied petroleum gas, or LPG, is still regulated in Spain. This applies to cylinders weighing between 8 and 20 kilos, including the traditional butane bottle used in many homes.

 

Prices are reviewed every two months, specifically on the third Tuesday, and are calculated based on a combination of international butane and propane prices, transport and distribution costs, and currency fluctuations.

 

There is also a built-in limit to how much prices can change and each revision is capped at a maximum increase or decrease of 5%.

 

Bottled gas remains an essential energy source for many households, particularly in areas that are not connected to the mains gas network. It’s still widely used for cooking, heating and hot water, especially in rural and coastal parts of the country.

 

However, its use has been gradually declining. In 2025, around 57 million LPG cylinders were consumed across Spain, but overall demand has fallen by more than 12% since 2021, reflecting a steady shift towards alternative energy sources.
