ARCHIVED - British couple rescued in Granada after their campervan became wedged in the tiny streets
Countless Andalucia city streets were only designed to permit pedestrians and animals, and are far too narrow for larger vehicles
A visit to the picturesque south of Spain is always a memorable experience but one British couple is probably trying to forget their latest trip as quickly as possible. Their mortifying mishap occurred in the tiny town of Sorvilán, located close to Granada and with a population of just 614 people.
Early on Saturday morning, March 11, the UK tourists were meandering through the village in their campervan, unmindful of the fact that the streets were becoming more and more narrow. Dating back to the 8th century BC, many of Andalucia’s cities aren’t able to cope with large vehicles, having been originally designed for pedestrians and small carts.
Before too long, the couple tried to enter an alley at an angle and the camper became wedged, trapping them between two walls until help arrived and freed the vehicle – four hours later. Local police officer José Rivas believes the pair were visiting Sorvilán’s famous church and fountain and missed the signs warning larger motors to avoid the town centre.
“They were passing through the village and never had any intention of staying so long,” officer Rivas explained.
“A tow-truck had to be called and there was very little they could do but sit and wait while we tried to free the motorhome.
“We’re talking about streets that were laid when people used donkey-drawn carriages and weren’t designed for the sort of vehicle that got stuck on Saturday.”
Fortunately, no one was hurt in the accident but the driver’s door of the motorhome was badly damaged, as was the wall of the alley where the vehicle became stuck. However, once released, the Brits were able to drive away and enjoy the rest of their time in southern Spain.
“I hope this experience doesn’t put them off returning again. They just need to be careful about where they try and go with their motorhome,” Mr Rivas concluded.
