British holidaymaker raped aboard Spanish cruise ship
One of the ship’s entertainers was arrested for the attack when the liner docked in Mallorca
A crew member of the MSC Fantasia cruise ship was arrested on Friday March 15 by the Guardia Civil in Palma de Mallorca on suspicion of raping a British tourist on board the vessel. The 27-year-old Kenyan suspect, who worked as an entertainer on the ship, was taken into custody when the ship docked in the island capital early on Friday morning.
According to reports, the alleged assault occurred after the victim, a 30-year-old woman, and the suspect had been dancing together on the ship throughout the night. The man then reportedly forced the woman to engage in sexual relations, leaving her in a state of shock. The victim subsequently notified the ship’s captain, who alerted island police.
Agents from the Armed Institute arrested the suspect hours later, confiscating his mobile phone for further investigation. However, the suspect exercised his right to remain silent during a court appearance on Sunday, prompting the court to release him on bail. It remains unclear whether he will be allowed to leave Mallorca or must surrender his passport.
The MSC Fantasia docked in Palma on Friday in the first stop after leaving Naples on a seven-day round-trip of the Western Mediterranean.
This incident comes just over a year after a court in Valencia released an 18-year-old Italian suspect accused of raping a 17-year-old British teenager on a Panamanian-flagged cruise liner, the MSC Divina, which had departed from Palma de Mallorca.
In that case, the judge ruled that he had no jurisdiction under Spanish law to pursue a criminal investigation.
According to an official statement at the time, the court “established it had no jurisdiction over the case because the alleged crime happened in international waters on board a Panamanian-flagged ship so to all effects in Panamanian territory”.
