British paraglider seriously injured after smashing into rocks in southern Spain
The tourist was on an organised tour over the Sierra de Aras Mountain in Córdoba, Andalucia
A British man in his 40s was airlifted to hospital after suffering a severe accident while paragliding in southern Spain. The incident occurred on Tuesday March 12, just seconds after take-off from the summit of the Sierra de Aras Mountain, near Lucena in the province of Córdoba.
According to eyewitnesses, the man plummeted to the ground and landed on rocks, sustaining multiple injuries to his back and arms. Emergency services were quickly alerted and police, paramedics and firefighters were deployed to the scene.
Due to the potential risk of spinal injuries, the victim was carefully stabilised and transported to a nearby helipad, where he was then airlifted to Reina Sofia Hospital in Cordoba.
Footage taken at the scene showed the victim being treated by medical experts, with a neck brace and drip attached, as they carefully extracted him from the steep hillside where he had crashed.
The man, whose identity has not been released, was part of a tour group organised by a German company that specialises in paragliding trips for beginners and occasional fliers.
The Sierra de Aras is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering activities such as paragliding, hang gliding and mountain biking. The area is also known for its rich palaeontological history, attracting visitors from all over the world.
The 2,750-metre-high lookout spot is home to a baroque church called the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Araceli.
The victim's current condition remains unknown, but sources indicate that he is still receiving treatment at the hospital.
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and are working closely with the tour operator and witnesses to determine the cause of the accident.
