British tourist plunges head-first from Mallorca balcony
The UK government has issued a serious warning against risky behaviour on balconies in Spain
A 43-year-old British tourist is fighting for his life after a horrifying plunge from a hotel balcony in Puerto Pollensa, Mallorca. The incident, which occurred in broad daylight on Tuesday July 9, is just the latest in a series of similar accidents and has raised concerns about balcony safety, especially among British nationals vacationing in Spain.
It was just before 2pm when the unnamed tourist fell a staggering 15 feet, landing on his head and causing serious injuries. Initial reports suggest he had been involved in an argument with someone on the phone moments before the dramatic fall.
Hotel staff and witnesses at the four-star Pollentia Resort & Spa were quick to call the emergency services, and local police from Alcudia Town Hall rushed to the scene, along with two ambulances.
The victim was transferred to Son Espases Hospital in Palma, the island's capital, for urgent medical attention. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and it remains unclear if the man had been holidaying alone or with companions.
Sadly, this incident is not an isolated one. Just weeks ago, a 27-year-old British man suffered serious injuries after falling from a first-floor balcony in the same holiday hotspot.
And in another tragic turn of events, a 24-year-old German tourist lost his life after falling 40 feet from a balcony following a night of partying. Emergency services rushed to the scene but were unable to save him.
In light of these concerning events, the UK government issued a warning to British nationals ahead of the holiday season. The statement cautioned against dangerous behaviour near balconies and emphasised the importance of adhering to safety guidelines.
The statement read: “There have been a number of serious accidents, some fatal, involving British nationals falling from height, including from balconies.
“Do not take unnecessary risks around balconies or other high places, particularly if you’re under the influence of drink or drugs.
“If you are staying in a room with a balcony, follow the safety advice at the hotel or apartment, and watch out for friends who may be at risk.
“In some regions you may be fined or evicted from your hotel if you are found to be behaving irresponsibly around balconies.”
