ARCHIVED - Cadiz gears up for June Street Carnival
The iconic event will go ahead in Andalucía this summer if the health situation allows
With health experts in Spain predicting that the sixth wave of the pandemic is close to hitting its peak, festival organisers in the Andalusian city of Cádiz are cautiously looking to June to resurrect their iconic Street Carnival. Dating back to the 16th century, the week-long Cádiz fiesta is an extravaganza of dances, costume contests, cavalcades, carousels and food tastings.
The City Council has already submitted the paperwork to begin requesting tenders from contractors and the celebration will once again grace the Plaza de San Antonio in June this year “if the social and health conditions allow it”. A budget of 149,538.90 euros has been allocated to the project.
Some of the largest contracts awarded will be for the supply of coloured paper and streamers that form a huge part of the Great Parade each year. According to the mayor of Cadiz, “we are talking about a supply of 750 sacks of paper of 5 kilograms each, that is, a total of 3,750 kilos, to which must be added 500 boxes of streamers, each with 40 packages of 25 units” that will be used in several processions over the carnival week.
